Australia is partnering with Oilmin Holdings Ltd. – a Papua New Guinean company specialising in logistics and infrastructure – to install solar energy systems at Baimuru Station, an administrative hub on the banks of the Purari River in Kikori District.

The new systems will supply reliable electricity to water treatment, ice production and cold storage facilities, strengthening essential services and enhancing livelihoods for approximately 1,500 people living in and around Baimuru Station.

The project is installing:

  • 1 x reverse osmosis water treatment plant  
  • 1 x solar ice machine
  • 250 x home solar systems
  • 30 x solar streetlights

Outcomes

Improved livelihoods and economic opportunities: Solar power will lower energy costs and support economic activity in Baimuru and surrounding communities.

Enhanced living standards: Increased access to clean drinking water, improved food security and reliable electricity for the delivery of essential services.

Increased security and community wellbeing: Improved safety and security after dark, especially for women and girls.

Environmental conservation: Solar energy will reduce carbon emissions and increase environmental awareness among the local community.
