Australia is partnering with the Salesians of Don Bosco Inc. – a renowned education organisation with over four decades’ experience in Papua New Guinea – to install solar energy systems at Araimiri Secondary School in Kerema District. The new systems will supply clean electricity to classrooms, dormitories and a community aid post, benefitting 500 students, 30 members of staff and surrounding communities.

Reliable electricity will power a new computer lab and light up the school grounds, supporting independent study after dark and improving access to online resources.
The project will train students, teachers and community members to maintain the new systems, ensuring the school has access to clean electricity in the years ahead.

The project is installing:

  • 1 x 106 kW solar system for school facilities
  • 1x 5kW solar system for community aid post
  • 25 x home solar systems
  • 40 x solar streetlights

Outcomes

Improved infrastructure: A stable, reliable source of energy, reducing reliance on diesel generators and lowering the school’s operational costs.

Improved teaching and learning: Reliable electricity will enable teachers and students to work after dark and increase access to online resources.

Increased security and community wellbeing: Solar lighting will improve safety after dark and light up spaces for gatherings and adult education.

Environmental conservation: Solar energy will reduce carbon emissions and increase environmental awareness among students and staff.
