The project installed solar power systems in 74 of the district’s remotest villages. The new solar systems are supplying clean, reliable energy to more than 9,000 households, 76 community facilities and 151 streetlights, lighting up homes, streets and public spaces for more than 35,000 people.
Access to clean, reliable electricity is making a profound impact on people’s lives. Solar power is improving the delivery of healthcare and education. The new solar streetlights are lighting up streets and community spaces, improving safety and wellbeing – especially for women and girls – and encouraging greater community interaction after dark.
Solar energy is also supporting fair, inclusive development and creating economic opportunity. The opportunity to participate in economic activity and prosper; to secure and grow livelihoods; to start up micro and small businesses. These opportunities will support sustainable development in Namatanai for decades to come.
Local communities are playing a key role in the project’s long-term success. 592 local Solar Champions (296 women and 296 men) are providing ongoing maintenance for the new solar systems. Backed by a dedicated Solar Hub in Silom set up to provide technical guidance and spare parts, the Champions are ensuring their communities have access to clean, reliable energy in the years ahead.
