Australia is partnering with the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Tenkile Conservation Alliance to deliver off-grid solar energy systems for rural communities in the southern foothills of the Torricelli Mountain Range.

The new solar systems will power homes, communities and schools in 43 villages, increasing access to clean, reliable electricity for approximately 13,500 people across Aitape, Lumi and Nuku districts. The project will train more than 20 local Solar Champions to maintain the new systems, ensuring their communities have access to clean, reliable energy in the years ahead.

The project is installing:

  • 1,500 x home solar systems
  • 100 x solar streetlights

Outcomes

Improved livelihoods and economic opportunities: Reduced costs for small businesses and support for economic activity in the wider community.

Enhanced delivery of essential services: Reliable electricity will improve the quality of education, healthcare and other key services.

Increased security and wellbeing: Solar power will light up homes and community spaces, improving safety after dark, especially for women and girls.

Environmental conservation: Solar energy will reduce carbon emissions, improve environmental awareness and promote clean energy practices.
