Australia is partnering with the PNG National Fisheries Authority and ASK Sanctuary Tilapia Farm – an aquaculture enterprise specialising in farming genetically modified fish – to install off-grid solar energy systems in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands Province. The new solar systems will supply clean, reliable electricity to ASK Sanctuary Tilapia Farm as well as homes and streetlights, benefitting more than 1,500 people living around Yonki Dam.
The project will enable 72 local fish farmers to boost productivity, reduce post-harvest losses and access high-value markets.
The project is installing:
- 1 x 10 kW solar system for aquaculture facilities
- 100 x home solar systems
- 15 x solar streetlights
Outcomes
Improved livelihoods and economic opportunities: Increased productivity and market access for fish-farming households, and support for economic activity in the wider community.
Improved food security: Increased supply of Tilapia, a fast-growing, high-protein fish, will help address nutritional needs.
Increased security and community wellbeing: Solar lighting will improve safety and security after dark, especially for women and girls.
Environmental conservation: By replacing diesel generators, solar energy will support sustainable aquaculture practices and reduce carbon emissions.
