Australia is partnering with the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program (TKCP) PNG Inc. to install solar energy systems across Kabwum and Tewae-Siassi districts. The new solar systems will supply clean, reliable electricity to remote communities in the Yopno-Uruwa-Som (YUS) Conservation Area.

By replacing costly and polluting diesel generators with clean solar power, the project is supporting TKCP’s conservation efforts, enhancing livelihoods and improving living standards for more than 15,000 people living in and around the YUS Conservation Area.

The project is installing:

  • 11 x solar systems for community facilities and coffee processing facilities
  • 3000 x home solar systems
  • 300 x solar streetlights

Outcomes

Improved livelihoods and economic opportunities: Access to reliable energy will create jobs and boost incomes. It will also support livelihoods and economic activity among the wider community.

Enhanced delivery of essential services: Reliable power will improve the quality of education, healthcare and other essential services.

Increased security and wellbeing: By lighting up homes and community spaces, the project will improve safety at night, especially for women and girls.

Environmental conservation: Access to solar energy will cut the use of firewood and reduce pressure on the forest, supporting habitat protection.
