Australia is partnering with the Papua New Guinea Education Advocacy Network (PEAN), which works to advance inclusive, high-quality public education in Papua New Guinea through policy influence, research, knowledge sharing, and capacity building.
Through this partnership, off-grid solar energy systems are being installed in 9 schools across Gazelle and Pomio districts. The new systems will light up classrooms, dormitories and communal areas, creating safe, supportive learning spaces for approximately 100 teachers and 3,150 students.
The project is installing:
- 9 x standalone solar systems for schools
- 120 x solar home systems
- 8 x solar systems for community spaces
- 55 x solar streetlights
Outcomes
Improved teaching and learning: Reliable electricity to power lights and devices, and increase access to online resources.
Increased security and community wellbeing: Solar lighting will improve night studies and safety after dark, especially for female students and teachers.
Reduced energy costs: A stable, reliable source of energy, reducing reliance on diesel generators and lowering schools’ operating costs.
Environmental conservation: Reduction of carbon emissions and increased environmental awareness.
