Lighting up water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in Finschhafen has made it safer and easier for the community to access water after dark. This has led to improved sanitation and hygiene, and ultimately, better health outcomes.

The new solar lighting is improving security and wellbeing – especially for women and girls – and encouraging greater community interaction at night. Lighting at key community points is also encouraging community connection and supporting economic activity. Solar energy generated at water stations is being used to charge mobile phones, connecting people to their communities and to the wider world.

The project epitomises Australia’s locally led approach to development. Local partners and participating communities – particularly women, children and people living with a disability – made vital contributions to the project, informing decision-making and driving implementation every step of the way.
